As their emotional intimacy erodes, Ray and Bron isolate from each other and attempt to repair their broken family ties - Ray with her overworked, resentful single-mother sister and Bron with her religious teenage sister who doesn't fully grasp the complexities of gender identity. Their playdates are little oases of wildness, joy, and ease in all three of their lives, which ping-pong between familial tensions and deep-seeded personal stumbling blocks. An exhilarating and tender debut graphic novel that is an ode to the love and connection shared among three women and the child they all adore.Ģ022 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize WINNERĢ022 Lambda Literary Award Finalist, LGBTQ ComicsĢ021 National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" Honoreeīron and Ray are a queer couple who enjoy their role as the fun weirdo aunties to Ray's niece, six-year-old Nessie. ![]()

![]() Some readers might be surprised at how quickly the Kidd kids move on after their father's sudden disappearance, but all in all, this first installment offers a smart setup for an adventurous, multi-volumed middle-grade series. There's a lot of of gunplay throughout the the story, but the Kidds also use their other skills to get out of jams (Storm uses her knowledge of maritime law to outwit a police officer, for example). Plus, most tween readers will enjoy getting to know the resourceful and loyal Kidd siblings: Handsome flirt Tommy is great at sailing the boat, overweight Storm is great with the computers and has a photographic memory, Bick, the older of a pair of strong-willed (and often arguing) twins is writing the story, and his twin Beck is the artist who illustrates his perspective - offering her own take, as well. Treasure hunting makes for a fun premise, of course, and the Kidd's constant run-ins with scuba ninjas, a Pirate King, and other crazy characters keeps TREASURE HUNTERS sailing along. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tropes: Evil Men and Cross-Class Marriages For now, let’s talk about some overarching characteristics of this series. I would subdivide them into four distinct three-book arcs, which I’ll discuss in more detail later when I recap the individual books. Hoyt slowly builds a whole world, and skillfully sets up each book by hinting at the conflict and introducing the characters in previous books in some cases, secondary characters appear in multiple books before starring in their own stories. The Maiden Lane books take place in early Georgian England (1737–1742), mostly in London. These books are the perfect mix of romantic and bonkers. ![]() Overall: I binge-read this whole series over the course of about a month in the fall of 2021, and I have no regrets. ![]() Plot: Something bonkers is definitely going down. Heat Factor: Above-average historical romance heatĬharacter Chemistry: Always solid-even if I hated the characters, they always seemed to like each other. ![]() ![]() ![]() What we see in this novel is truly a city without sleep. He chooses Sheik Magd al-Din and his friend Dimyan as the center of the novel. Happily Meguid's book has provided plenty of historical information while also providing a story of the city's inhabitants that opens up that history. The story of Egypt, let alone Alexandria, during WWII was a great unknown to me. ![]() ![]() ![]() Anders reveals an intersection full of possibilities. The burgeoning romance brims with eccentricities, but the true fun of Charlie Jane Anders’ Nebula Award-winning novel is its blend of the fantasy and science fiction genres. They hold opposing views on how to save the world and, of course, fall in love as they fight against each other. After becoming estranged in their adolescence, the pair is reunited in adulthood, just as the planet seems to be tilting toward self-destruction. Patricia is a witch with magical powers, while Laurence is a tech genius with a time machine. In a great war over the fate of humanity, what will prevail: science or magic? The question propels this unconventional fantasy love story, which finds two childhood friends driven apart by their differences. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Read Val McDermid's take on the Popularity of Irish Crime Fictio n.
